Defenders of Wildlife Hails President Obama’s Rejection of the Keystone Pipeline

WASHINGTON – Today, President Obama rejected TransCanada Corp.’s request to build the Keystone pipeline, a milestone victory in the fight for conserving America’s wildlife and natural resources.

The following is a statement from Jamie Rappaport Clark, President and CEO of Defenders of Wildlife:

“President Obama has made the right call in rejecting the Keystone pipeline. The pipeline was an oil spill waiting to happen, with potentially devastating effects not only for wildlife but also for local communities along the pipeline’s proposed route.

“In the 21st century, we need to be weaning ourselves off dirty fossil fuels and leading the global charge toward clean energy solutions for our country. With his decision, President Obama has once again demonstrated his commitment to clean energy and to helping America tackle the tremendous challenges and threats posed by climate change.”
