Senate Democrats Release Infrastructure Plan with Environmental Safeguards, Modernization

WASHINGTON (March 7, 2018) – Today, Senate Democrats offered a comprehensive plan to modernize our nation’s infrastructure that retains environmental protections and includes provisions to protect threatened and endangered species and their habitat.

Defenders of Wildlife President and CEO Jamie Rappaport Clark issued the following statement:

“Senate Democrats want to invest $1 trillion to address crumbling infrastructure and protect public health and our environment. It is a stark and welcome contrast to President Trump’s proposal which focuses more on undermining environmental safeguards than on funding infrastructure.

“The president served up a slate of environmental rollbacks with a batch of funding gimmicks and called it an infrastructure plan. But American’s aren’t biting. Polling shows that voters overwhelmingly reject the idea that improving our nation’s infrastructure should come at the expense of protections for our air, water, wildlife and natural places.

“By contrast the Senate Democrats’ proposal offers real money, resiliency and safety for our communities and wildlife; it also invests $15 billion in our public lands, recognizing their importance and maintenance needs and promoting our outdoor economy – a far more appetizing option that both Republicans and Democrats can sink their teeth into.”
